Abstract:

Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) consists of  3-components:  (1) Organization / Teaming, (2) Lean Operating System, (3)  Commercial / Contractual.   It is estimated that about 25 projects have or are presently being delivered using IPD with Sutter Health being the  most well recognized.  So, it is not often that all 3 components come  together to form a complete integrated project delivery system. Nonetheless, more and  more owners are becoming aware of IPD and the benefits that it promises.  This development makes it necessary for professionals in the Design, Construction Management, and Specialty Contracting communities to be  knowledgeable of  all three of the  IPD components.

This presentation will focus on one of the IPD components:  Organization / Teaming. Our speakers will explore the foundations that create high performance teams inside an IPD environment (as identified by LCI) that increase RELIABILITY and in turn increase TRUST.

LCI Houston Community of Practice

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Houston Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI has been developed to provide local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers who are doing business in the Houston area.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share and develop a lean community in the Houston area.

We are dedicated to exploring the three opportunities provided by Lean Project Delivery (LPD):

-Impeccable coordination to create predictable work flow

-Projects as a production system to change the structure of work in design and construction.

-Project as a collective enterprise to align financial incentives.
